Hey, I was just reading through this thread, and we here at Harvest have actually developed a simple, fast, and intuitive app for invoicing and time tracking.

Our app quickly makes invoices, allows you to receive payment through Paypal, mark invoices as "paid", and auto-generate (and customize) a thank you email. Check out GetHarvest (http://www.getharvest.com) for more info, and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!

Best Wishes,
Karen

Some great tips. Glad that you shared them :)

BTW, I would like to suggest freelancers who are getting to invoicing to try out CurdBee (http://curdbee.com).

With CurdBee, you can accept payments via PayPal, Google Checkout or 2Checkout. Also, you can do muliple currency invoicing, automatic taxing and send reminders on late payments.

Give it a try, as a freelancer you will love the flexibility of the service.

Happy Invoicing!

Thanks, a fast reply and useful info. Would you believe there are hundreds of articles on how to invoice but nothing about what to do after payment?

Hiya,

Normally with every freelance work you tend to send an email confirming that the payment has been received, attached with an updated invoice confirming payment (i.e. a bit fat "paid" on top of it). This is receipt enough for pretty much most companies.

If you are working with a client on a regular basis (i.e. every couple of weeks or months) then a receipt will not be necessary as the accountant / accounts department will already have you in the system and pay you at the end of the month / project as previously agreed. Just make a note of the work order or purchase order number in case you need to chase one day.

Invoicing shouldn't be difficult, depending on how often you need to invoice there are plenty of software and websites that will do it for you.
I do mine manually I have a word template that i can just change and print. make sure you keep a copy for your records.

Chasing debts should always be done by a solicitor. If owed money by a business and the ammount is over £750 your solicitor can send a Stat demand. This will make the business bankrupt if they don't pay within 21days.
