An Inside look at Matchmaking for Call of Duty

Fascinating insights have emerged from the developers of Call of Duty, shedding light on the intricacies of their matchmaking system, with particular emphasis on the contentious issue of skill-based matchmaking. The comprehensive breakdown reveals that the matchmaking process weighs eight factors in total, with player skill being just one of them. Notably, connection quality is the most heavily weighted element, closely followed by the time it takes to find a match.

This disclosure counters the prevalent belief among dedicated players and content creators that ping is no longer the dominant factor in Call of Duty matchmaking. Instead, they contend that skill level significantly influences matchmaking decisions, sometimes leading to players being placed in matches with higher ping to align with their skill level. The revelation also delves into the nuanced measurement of latency, indicating that the game utilizes Delta Ping, which measures the round-trip time difference between the nearest server and the server associated with the evaluated lobby. Although the blog assures that players typically connect to servers in close proximity, it hints that exceptions may occur, likely influenced by the time-to-match factor.

[4K] For Honor – Open Beta Gameplay

Here I’ve recorded a bit of gameplay from For Honor. I joined the closed Beta a few weeks ago, and then back again this weekend for the open beta. I really enjoyed it, the Open Beta feels a bit more balanced during Duel, but 4v4 feels a bit less “well” balanced compared to the Closed Beta – might just be me, but that’s what I felt.

The Into and Tutorial:

And here is gameplay for Dominion, Duel and War Assets:

About the game: The bloodthirsty warlord Apollyon believes the people of the Knights, Vikings, and Samurai have grown weak and wants to create an age of all-out war through manipulation of each faction. To this end the perspectives of characters within each faction are shown as events are shaped, battles are waged, and agendas are created as Apollyon works to ensure continuous sparks of conflict between the Legion, the Warborn, and the Chosen.

[4K] Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands – Closed Beta gameplay

Here I’ve recorded a bit of gameplay from Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon – Wildlands. I joined the closed Beta this weekend and was thoroughly impressed by it – it runs smooth, it works well in 4K….. I’m looking forward to the release!

The game was recorded on a GTX 1080, 4k, using a very high preset.

About the game: The game is set in Bolivia, which has become increasingly unstable as the Santa Blanca drug cartel gains more power and influence to the point where Bolivia has become the world’s largest producer of cocaine. The rise in power of these drug cartels concerns the United States Government, as Santa Blanca’s influence has begun to spread beyond Bolivia. The last straw comes when a bomb targets the US embassy in La Paz and its intended target, DEA agent Ricky Sandoval, is kidnapped and tortured by Santa Blanca. As a result, the United States Army dispatches an elite special operations unit called “the Ghosts” to destroy the cartel and reveal the connection between Santa Blanca and the local government.

Did you enjoy the Closed Beta? Did you get your beta key?

Ninja Gaiden meets Dark Souls – Say Hello to ‘Nioh’

The amazing people behind Ninja Gaiden have released a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming game Nioh.

Visually Nioh looks quite similar to Ninja Gaiden or Ominusha, which has always been quite nice. However, this time round gameplay is (very Souls-y) reliant on your stamina meter, ensuring that you keep a close watch on it as you plan your strike or dodge.

See for yourselves:

It does even have a bit of a Bloodborne feel to it, from a defense point of view, while at the same time following the aggressive play style of Dark Souls. Note that the UI and use of D-Pad also play homage to the Souls series.

It will be interesting to see how this game progresses over the next months, and how it’ll stand apart from the Souls series.
